Tips on How to Buy Rechargeable Batteries

Buying Rechargeable Batteries
Many people purchase rechargeable batteries without even thinking about the differences among each kinds of batteries. However, each type of batteries has its own benefits and downsides hence a specific type may be more ideal in particular situations than others. Here is a guide on how to buy rechargeable batteries so you get the most value out of your money.

The initial thing that you have to consider in how to buy rechargeable batteries is the different types of rechargeable batteries. There are three main types of off-the-shelf rechargeable batteries: nickel metal hydride batteries, nickel cadmium batteries, and rechargeable alkaline manganese batteries. A nickel metal hydride battery is the most pricey of them all because it has the highest energy density.

The nickel cadmium’s energy capacity lies between the nickel metal hydride and the rechargeable alkaline manganese. It has an adequate energy capacity but it is not as high as those of nickel metal hydrides and it can be unstable depending on the temperature. The rechargeable alkaline manganese battery is the most low-cost of the three but it also has the lowest energy capacity and it can only be charged for a couple of times.

The next thing that you have to understand on how to buy rechargeable batteries is type of device that where you are going to attach the batteries. Devices that uses a lot of energy especially those that have LCD screens such as digital cameras and mp3 players can benefit from the nickel metal hydride’s high energy capacity.

Meanwhile those devices that still need a fair amount of power like wireless mouse, battery-operated toys, and portable radios can utilize the less pricey nickel cadmiums. Devices that have minimal power requirements or those that are seldom used like remote controls and flashlights can operate on rechargeable alkaline manganese batteries.

The last thing that you have to take into account in how to buy rechargeable batteries is the estimated frequency of usage of the device where you intend to use the batteries. This is because different types of batteries have different self-discharge rates. Nickel metal hydride batteries self-discharge at the fastest rate at 30% per month even when not contained within a device. Next is the nickel cadmiums at 10% per month. Rechargeable alkaline batteries on the other hand can keep their charge for years.
